Advanced Open Water Certification Course - 3 Days

Now that you have learned the basics of Open Water, it’s time for the real adventure dives to begin!! The Advanced Open Water course is the next step to take to keep you on a path of learning, safety and exploration under the guidance of an experienced PADI Professional. With no required classroom work, test taking, or pool sessions, you will earn your Advanced Open Water certification with 100% hands-on practical learning in the Ocean environment!

Book your Advanced Open Water Course and receive your Adventures in Diving manual. This manual explains every course dive and lets you pre-study the safety rules and skill techniques. Your PADI Instructor will discuss your preferences to build a customized schedule for your Adventure Dives. Of the 6 ocean dives offered, there are only two required – Deep and Underwater Navigation. Upon designing your schedule, you will choose the other four adventure dives with the help and insight of your instructor. Depending on experience, we typically start learning skills on a shallow reef dive to work on buoyancy and navigation skills while building up to the deeper and more advanced dives later in the course that require more theory and greater understanding of your dive computer.

Unlike the Open Water Course that required much pre-studying, this Advanced Course has less studying with a more practical hands-on learning approach. The advanced course NOT require any classroom time, written exams, or pool sessions. It’s all fun adventure diving!!

Min age, 10 years old. Duration, 3 days. Location, flexible and customizable (maybe combined with local experience or expedition. Prerequisite, Open Water or beginner Certification (Any SCUBA Agency). Certification earned, PADI Advanced Open Water.

Calendar

The most important next step is booking the course to register and get your book, begin your knowledge development and schedule your dive days. Unlike the Open Water course, there is very little book work to read and can be done in a night or two.

Click on the itinerary tab for the Three day AOW course schedule. It is completely flexible and customizable based on your private groups needs. Our instructor will meet you prior to the course to deliver your AOW Manual, discuss scheduling, and accommodate any gear fitting needs. This can be done at your residence or a dive shop of your choice. Very little time is required for the knowledge development portion as the chapters are relatively small and you are only required to read two chapters prior to each course day.

This allows for the student to work on trim weighting, gear improvements, neutral buoyancy and advanced fin maneuvers while learning the basic fundamentals of underwater navigation, compass use, and situational awareness. Before the dives you will go over the knowledge reviews with your instructor while preparing for your dives to ensure understanding of the material and the required skills. Conduct two dives on a shallow reef to exhibit and practice skills.

Very often students choose wreck diving, fish identification, search and recovery, night diving, among several others. Before the dives you will go over the knowledge reviews with your instructor while preparing for your dives to ensure understanding of the material and the required skills. Conduct two dives on a reef or shipwreck to exhibit and practice skills depending on profile and adventure dives chosen.

We recommend combining the Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver Specialty with the AOW course so that you learn from a real hands-on experience with Nitrox on our deep dive for increased safety and bottom time. Enriched air (Nitrox) allows us to do consecutive deep dives and stay longer on the bottom while decreasing your risk of DCS so we can truly enjoy the World Famous shipwrecks of Key Largo including the Duane or Spiegel Grove!

Can you explain a bit more about the curriculum? How much do I have to read?

There are over 15 chapters in the book based on different adventure dives you may choose from. Only Deep and Navigation are required but your instructor will help you design the course around the other electives. Each dive of the course will be based off these skills. For example, during the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan and track your dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time. The other knowledge and skills you develop will vary with your interest and the adventures dives you choose – photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks, night diving and many more.

What additional equipment might I want to invest in for my AOW course beyond my basic personal gear?

As you realized in the Open Water course, all certified divers should own their own personal gear, including mask/snorkel and fins. Fitted perfectly to your face and feet, these essential pieces of gear can greatly increase comfort, performance and pleasure, which directly correlates to your safety and success. Scuba gear such as air tanks, BCD and regulator will be provided in the course. Understanding the differences in various types of gear and how they perform is all part of becoming an advanced diver and will help you fine tune your kit.

Beyond the basic scuba equipment, you may consider some important accessories to add to your kit as an advanced diver including a compass, dive knife or dive tool, noise make, and surface marker buoy. Your PADI Instructor will explain the equipment that you need and may suggest specialty gear, such as a compass for navigation, dive light for wreck diving or lift bag for search and recovery.
